This Emergency First Aid at Work training course gives you the knowledge and skills necessary for you to successfully carry out your duties as a first aider in a low-risk environment.
The Emergency First Aid at Work also referred to as an EFAW course is a professional training course that teaches individuals how to handle first aid-related emergencies in the workplace. This EFAW course is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and is mandatory for anyone who wishes to become a designated first aider in the workplace. This course can save you both your time and money, delivered as blended learning! The eLearning modules can be completed in your own time, at your own pace. The practical is delivered in a classroom setting offering a more hands-on approach. For added reassurance, each learner is assessed using a variety of practical demonstrations, question and answer sessions, quizzes, and active activities such as roleplay.
The EFAW training course is designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to handle emergency first aid situations. The course covers a range of first aid topics, including:
• The role of the first aider
• Health and safety regulations
• Risk assessment
• Communication and casualty care
• First aid for injuries and illness
• First aid for special circumstances
• Assessing an incident
• Practical scenarios
For more details about what you will learn during your course see the topics covered section below.
The main difference between Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) and First Aid at Work (FAW) is the depth of training. Emergency first aid at work is designed for low-risk workplaces, while first aid at work is designed for higher-risk workplaces. First aid at work also provides comprehensive training for those who are required to be the designated first aider within their workplace.
The First aid at Work course is 3 days long while the emergency First aid at work is only 1 day.
The content of each course also differs, with the First Aid At Work course covering a wider range of topics such as dealing with an unconscious casualty, heart attacks and strokes, and spinal injuries. The emergency first aid at work course covers basic life support, choking, burns and bleeds.

The EFAW course is beneficial for anyone who wants to learn how to administer first aid in an emergency situation. The skills and knowledge you will gain from this course could potentially save someone’s life. Emergencies can happen at any time and anywhere. That is why it is important to be prepared and know what to do.
The course is also beneficial for employers, as it will help them to comply with health and safety regulations. Employers have a duty of care to ensure that their employees are safe at work. The timely administration of first aid ensures quick recovery and saves businesses time and money. Holding the Emergency First Aid at Work Certificate will also increase your chances of getting employed.
Certificates issued for the Emergency First Aid at Work course expire after three years. To renew your certificate, you must retake the full EFAW course. This is so you are aware of new approaches and improvements that may assist you in delivering more effective treatment.
It is mandatory for all first aiders to undergo annual refresher training. This course can also be taken as refresher training as it is designed to keep your skills up-to-date and ensure that you are always prepared to handle an emergency first aid situation. The refresher training must be completed within 12 months of the previous EFAW qualification expiring.

This topic will cover the roles and responsibilities of a first aider that you need to carry out in order to minimise the risk of infection to yourself and to others while providing first aid. You will also learn when the casualty's consent is required and when it can be assumed.
You will learn how to conduct a scene survey, as well as, a primary survey of a casualty, and summon appropriate assistance based on the outcome of that survey.
In this topic, you will learn when and how to deliver CPR and place a casualty in the recovery position. You will also learn how to administer first aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure.
You will learn how to identify when a casualty is experiencing mild or severe choking and how to deliver first aid to them.
You will learn to identify the severity of external bleeding and control it. You will also learn to recognise a casualty who is suffering from shock and administer first aid to them.
In this topic, you will learn how to administer first aid to a casualty with smalls cuts, grazes, bruises, small splinters, minor burns and scalds.
This course will prepare you to provide immediate assistance to any person suffering from either a minor or serious illness/ injury. By knowing what to do in an emergency, First Aiders can potentially preserve someone's life.
EFAW is a 1-day First Aid course that is designed to prepare you for emergencies in low-risk environments.
FAW on the other hand is a 3-day First Aid course designed to cover the training requirements for the official First Aider in an organisation. It is ideal for high-risk environments.
HSE recommends that at any given time if there are more than 25 individuals at a venue, the 3-day FAW course will be required to maintain the Health & Safety of both employees and the general public.
We recommend the 3-day FAW qualification to anyone where this is a feasible option because it includes the 1-day EFAW content and enables the first aider to recognise and administer first aid in more serious scenarios. To take our 3-day FAW course, click HERE.
There are no specific pre-course requirements other than just meeting the minimum age requirement of 14.
