This topic will cover the roles and responsibilities of a first aider that you need to carry out in order to minimise the risk of infection to yourself and to others while providing first aid. You will also learn when the casualty's consent is required and when it can be assumed.
You will learn to recognise suspected fractures and dislocations, sprains and strains and to administer first aid (including the application of a support sling or an elevated sling) to a casualty who has sustained these injuries.
You will learn to identify the routes that poison can take to enter the body, how to administer first aid to a casualty who is affected by sudden poisoning, and how to identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning.
It is highly unlikely that legal action will be taken against a first aider given he or she was following best practice and had the right training. However, you should check with your company's insurance providers whether they cover first aiders' liability in their insurance policy.
